Kyoto’s Hidden Gateway to the Afterlife
A short walk from Kyoto’s famous tourist spots stands a temple that has long been believed to mark the boundary between this world and the next. Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple is home to a mysterious well said to lead to hell. In this column, I will introduce this quiet temple and the legend of the world of the dead hidden beside Kyoto’s busy streets.
For people in old Kyoto, the world of the dead was not seen as something distant. It was closely connected to everyday life. This area was once the starting point of the funeral route, where families bid their final farewells.
The temple is also linked to a well-known legend about Onono Takamura, a respected scholar and court official in the ninth century. During the day, he served the Emperor. At night, however, he was said to descend through the well into the underworld — a realm where souls were judged after death. There, he assisted King Enma, the powerful ruler of the underworld who judged the souls of the deceased.
This story of a man moving between two worlds has shaped the temple’s mysterious reputation.
When I visited Rokudo Chinno-ji, I discovered it tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood with few tourists. The well could only be seen through the narrow gaps of a traditional wooden window. I stepped closer and peered inside, feeling for a moment like an explorer who had uncovered a hidden passage. I held my breath — yet there was no fear. Beyond the dim hall, a small garden covered in vivid green moss slowly came into view. Soft sunlight drifted across the moss, and the only sound was the faint whisper of the wind.
For me, Rokudo Chinno-ji revealed a quieter, more contemplative side of Kyoto — one that exists beyond the crowded tourist streets. Kyoto is not only a bustling sightseeing city; it is also a place where history and belief quietly endure. If you visit Kyoto, consider stepping away from the famous temples and shrines. Take a moment to stand before this small temple and look into the well. You may find less fear than you expect. Instead, you may begin to understand how people in the past viewed the world after death.
