Experience History Beneath Kyoto’s Blood Ceiling

In Kyoto, there is a place where you can still see traces of a battle from about 400 years ago. It is the “Blood Ceiling” at Yogen-in Temple. The wooden floorboards used in a castle during a battle in 1600 are now used in the ceiling of the main hall. When I visited this place, the battles I had read about in books felt real, not just stories from the past. In this column, I will share my experience and how this place lets you feel history.

The reconstructed Fushimi Castle

In 1600, a battle happened in this castle, according to historical records. Many people lost their lives in this battle. The boards used in the ceiling of Yogen-in are said to be the floorboards from that castle. Out of respect for the people who died, the boards were not used as floors again. Instead, they were used for the ceiling. When I heard this story, I felt that these boards were not just pieces of wood.

During my trip to Kyoto, I visited Yogen-in. When I entered the main hall, the air felt cool. I could smell old wood and incense, and I could hardly hear the noise outside. When I looked up, I saw the Blood Ceiling. At first, it looked like normal old wood patterns. The guide explained that these marks were from the battle. When I looked again, I noticed dark stains that did not look natural. At that moment, I could not move for a while. As I stared at the marks above my head, it did not feel like something from hundreds of years ago. It felt very real. This is not a place for tourist photos, but I still remember the scene clearly.

Note: This photo shows the “Blood Ceiling” at Shoden-ji Temple. While the location is different, the ceiling boards come from the same Fushimi Castle as those at Yogen-in.

At Yogen-in in Kyoto, you can still see boards from a battle 400 years ago on the ceiling. Here, history is not only in books or videos. It is inside the building, right in front of you. If you visit Kyoto, try to stop under this ceiling for a moment. By looking and feeling the air, you may think about history in a different way.
